Making horseshoes is so much easier with the right tools – a quality hammer, a nice anvil at the right height, a fire that provides an even heat and a focussed mind are all important.
But it’s vital to have the right steel to start with too. I was spoiled being an apprentice farrier in the UK (no, I mean apart from the daily beatings from the boss). I took for granted the quality of the concave barstock for making shoes. There was always a huge pile and we just cut off what we needed for the day. Our only problem was making a shoe good enough that the boss would nail on and not throw across the yard in despair. We never gave a thought to the quality of the steel we were using – it always behaved the same when we hit it.
Since moving to the other side of the world, I’ve made shoes from spring steel, construction rebar and some other materials that I wasn’t even sure what they were. So it’s like “coming home” when using UK concave steel again.
